When I imagine which Greenland Dog I would say goodbye to first, I never would have guessed it would be an 18 day old puppy but I felt as short as her life was she still
desreved to be remembered.
Born as one of 8 puppies from our Jess x Jack litter, she was the smallest in the litter and so had been getting all the special treatment from day one to ensure her bigger siblings weren’t
preventing her getting her fair share at feeding time. While clearly nowhere near caught up to them in the 18 days we shared with her, she had been gaining weight daily and having reached the
two weeks milestone we were feeling confident she was on the right path.
Unfortunately life is very unfair, and in the space of 48 hours ago something changed, enough so that we decided to get her to the vets for extra support. They tried their best – and she certainly
tried her best too – but as is sometimes the case with these precious little ones an internal scan revealed a congenital issue that it wouldn’t be fair to ask her to keep fighting against and so we
made the decision to let her go peacefully and in as much comfort as we could.
It probably seems silly to talk about them like they have personalities at not even three weeks old but she really was so sweet. Where the others would opt to spread out across the whelping box
post-feed she would generally choose to sleep draped over her Mum (legs, chest, wherever she could find a spot to sprawl or curl) and when her eyes opened she would often be found nuzzling her
siblings too; during the early days of two hourly alarms (set to ensure I had seen her feed) she was just as loving, often falling asleep on my chest while we waited for her turn.
As I say, life is very unfair and I am of course very grateful Jess (and the rest of us) have seven other beautiful babies to focus on but at the moment, while still so raw, it really doesn’t make
hurt any less.
