Lucie – the leading lady of the Fenrirkin pack – is a very special girl indeed. Bred by Jayne and Ian Hood of Windberg Kennels she is the daughter of their Dutch import Kirei and Snowolf's home bred boy Bullit. She has a pedigree behind her that combines some brilliant lines from both sides of the Atlantic - and both parents have a lot to boast about in their own right too!
Bullit, her father, was a striking black and white dog and a multi-talented character, active in both agility and more traditional working pursuits while equally proving himself in the show ring. Starting his show career in 2009, his success in the ring earned him 3 CCs, 3 RCCs, his Show Certificate of Merit and an illustrious UK Champion title. He has come away with not only many BOBs & BOS, but has taken BIS on numerous occasions, once at an All Breeds Open Show and twice at a speciality show (AMCUK May 2009 & again in AMCUK May 2013) - not to mention two Best Veteran In Speciality Show accolades! In the Summer of 2013, he earned his 3rd and crowning CC, becoming one of less than 20 UK Alaskan Malamute Champions at the time and making UK history by being the first seal & white male champion in this country. He has been consistently placed in the Top 20 Dogs in the AMCUK MOYA awards and came 4th in Top Veteran 2012 (his first year being eligible for this award) and No 1 Veteran 2013. And as if that wasn't enough, his progeny have clearly carried on in his success, their efforts putting him in the MOYA Top 20 Stud Dogs for 2011, 10th in 2012, 6th in 2013 & 2014 & 7th in 2017. His daughter clearly followed in his footsteps ;-)
Her mother, Kirei, is a whirlwind of energy doing everything at full throttle. She started her showing career with her breeders Bernadet & Ricardo in the Netherlands where she had a
success of great results, including BPIS at the AMCN Annual Speciality.
Her career has been equally successful with Ian and Jayne in the UK, starting with BP at Midland Counties Championship show which, with the succeses that followed, earned her the Top Import Title in
the AMCUK’s MOYA Awards for 2007 (as well as a top 10 Placing for Top Bitch) and keeping her in the top 20 for this title consistently from 2008-2011. Her return to the ring after maternity leave was
at LKA in 2010, where under Breed Specialist Judge Sue Ellis (Chayo) she placed 1st in a tough Open class, and went on to gain her first RCC - not too shabby! The efforts of her progeny earned her a
Top 20 placing in the AMCUK MOYA Top Brood Bitch award in 2012.
Lucie herself is a wonderful eccentric and definitely a bit of a mummy’s girl.
At home she can be a demanding lady, who makes it very clear when she wants cuddles and equally clear when she wants "play" time. Throughout her youth it was as if she had an on-off switch
where if not sleeping wass full of energy, cheekily stealing toys to entice the boys into playtime.
Having had Harry under her wing for many years, a proper big sister who ensured manners were learned alongside playtime, as a veteran she moved onto keeping our Greenland boys in check, with Dylan
her regular kennel mate and Noah quickly learning the ropes regarding how best to act around a lady!
She picks up on commands well, but get's bored easily and will soon make her own fun left unattended - making her entertaining, but hardwork!
Out and about she is a smiley and - very greedy - young lady, who will happily stick her head into peoples pockets to check for treats and naughtily jump up for a proper inspection. When it comes to dogs, she has a generally very tolerant nature with all genders if they aren't small and fluffy enough to be mistaken for lunch - and can be a real tease with the boys when she wants to!
Having attended a couple of shows as a puppy, Lucie initially seemed unsure of the show ring and was given a break until she turned a year and was into Junior classes.
At the end of April 2011, she returned with Sarah Towers (Wintadreama) as handler and her confidence bloomed, Crufts qualifying multiple times that year and being placed consistently at both
Championship and Open Show level.
Her 2012 career, with me now handling, also held success, seeing her Crufts qualify multiple times and highlighted by 1sts at Championship Shows and BOBs at Open Shows.
She ended 2012 by placing in the AMCUK MOYA Awards 7th in Top Special Beginner, 10th in Top Bitch and 18th in overall Top Malamute.
2013 was a great step forward, with her first Championship Show of the year the prestigious Crufts where she earned 2nd in a strong Limit Bitch class under Breed Specialist Judge Sue Ellis (Chayo). From there she went from strength to strength, with more class wins at Champ Shows as well as BOBs and Group placings at Open Show level. Our highlight had to be at National Working & Pastoral Championship Show in July, where on the hottest day of the year no less, she did me proud by earning not just her KC Stud Book No with a 1st in Open Bitch but then went on to take her 1st CC and BOS under Breed Specialist Sharon Loades. A day to remember! She ended 2013 in the AMCUK MOYA Awards as 5th Top Bitch and 8th Top Malamute Overall.
2014 was a good year despite missing numerous shows. The highlights of the year was being awarded Best Bitch, Best Opposite Sex and Reserve Best in Show at the AMCUK July Speciality Open Show under judge Averil Cawthera-Purdey (Lireva). Other results throughout the year have included several Open Show BOBs & Group Wins / Placings, and multiple Stud Book No qualifying places in Open Bitch at Championship Show level, as well as a placing in a highly competitive Limit Bitch class (25 entries) at Crufts Championship Show under Breed Specialist judge Kath Howarth (Hawkam).
She finished the year placing 6th Top Bitch and 15th Top Overall in the AMCUK Malamute of the Year Awards.
2015 got off to a good start, placing second in a highly competitive Open Bitch class at Boston & DCS Champ Show under Breed Specialist Nicola Singh (Sledog).
With our focus on working at the start of the year, and a litter planned for early Summer our showing was limited, but she still managed to squeeze in a few shows, earning mutiple class wins, Best of
Breeds and Group placings at Open Shows, including a Reserve Best in Rescue Stakes at the AMCUK May Speciality Open Show.
2016 started with multiple Best of Breeds at Open Shows in January as well as multiple top 3 places in the always tough Open Bitch class at Championship Shows, but after a Summer of concentrating on our puppy Greenland Dylan saw it culminate with a fantastic day at the AMCUK Speciality Championship Show, where she not only took her second CC with Best Bitch but went on to win Reserve Best in Speciality Show for a second time under Breed Specialists John Phillips (Monikoona / Stormwinds) & Sue Ellis (Chayo) - what a fabulous moment for us both, even out of coat!
2017 yielded some fantastic results for Lucie. In the UK, she placed 3rd in Open Bitch at the prestigious Crufts, in a huge entry of 24, took 2 RCCs, 2 Best Veterans in Breed at Championship Shows and closed her ShCM title. She also had her first experience of showing abroad, gaining 4 IKC Green Stars, 2 Best of Breeds and a RCACIB.
2018 was an an amazing year for Lucie, with highlights including multiple Best Veteran in breed awards at Championship Shows including a Veteran Group placing at East of England Championship Show, multiple Best Veteran in Shows at both all breeds Open Shows and a Speciality Open Show, her third & fourth Best Bitch wins at Speciality Shows, Veteran World Winner & Benelux Veteran Winner (ND & BE) titles, including (in Amsterdam) a BOS award giving her the title of Benelux Veteran Champion. And finally, alongside several RCCs, she also earned her third and foruth CCs, inclusing that crowning one with BOB in June, making her at the time one of only 3 Black/Seal & White UK Champions, one of whom was her Father, and athe only living one in the UK.
2019 may have seen Lucie reach her 9th year on this Earth, but there was no slowing her down.
Over the 12 months available she not only picked up 5 Best Veteran in Breeds across three countries, but also became the first Alaskan Malamute to achieve a UK Veteran Warrant title, earned 3
Green Stars, 3 Hungarian CACs, a UK RCC, numerous RCACs and in the process closed her Irish Champion, Irish Veteran Champion, Hungarian Veteran Champion & Dutch Veteran Champion title, as well as
picked up a Celtic Winner, Celtic Veteran Winner, Benelux Veteran Winner & Austrian Veteran Winner title along the way – not a bad effort!
2020 has proven a strange year, with the coronavirus pandemic cutting short many show plans and with her 10th irthday imminent Lucie taking more of a backseat in the show ring, but she still started the year with a cheek Best Veteran at Manchester Champ Show in January under breed specalist Sue Ellis (Chayo).
With two energetic parents behind her, its no surprise that Miss L took naturally to working and has since found her forte in Weight Pull.
She earned the 4 legs required for her AMCA WWPD title in 4 consecutive pulls during her first competitive season in the Allerton Park Weight Pull Championship, and went on to claim the Stormwinds trophy for 3rd Place 61-80lb Class in the Overall 2011/12 Championship. The last pull of the season saw her pull a personal best of over 24x her bodyweight, earning her first WWPDA / WWPDX leg. She completed the remaining 4 legs required for the title over the course of the 2012/13 Championship, earning not just her WWPDA & WWPDX titles but also the Cedarcreek Trophy for coming 2nd overall in the 61-80lb class for the season.
The 2013/14 Championship unfortunately saw Lucie miss some pulls due to bad timing with her seasons, however this didn't stop her pulling a New Personal Best of 28.1x her bodyweight and just
missing out on a trophy in the overall Championship by coming 4th in the 61-80lb class out of 36 qualifying dogs!
The 2014/15 Championship was similarly disjointed for Lucie, missing several pulls, but that didn't stop her earning the award for Highest Percentage of Bodyweight pulled on two occasions - one of
which was with a new personal best of over 29x her bodyweight - and ultimately coming 8th of 27 qualifying dogs in the overall championship.
Her efforts for the season also placed her 9th Top Weightpull Bitch in the AMCUK Working Malamute of the Year, the first time that Weightpull has been included in addition to competitive
rallies in this competition.
The 2015 / 16 Championship started with a strong pull of over 25x her bodyweight, an improved 26x her boydyweight later in the season; despite missing some pulls she still manage to earn the 3rd place trophy for the 61-80lb class in the overall Championship.
The 2016 / 17 Championship was a new experience with Lucie weighing into the 41-60lb class for the majority of the season. This didn't stop her pulling out all the stops despite continued adverse pulling conditions, which led to her placing Highest % of bodyweight pulled over the season and ultimately placing not only 1st in the Overall Championship for her class, but also to pull a new UK record of 33.96x her bodyweight on the final pull of the season - what a star!!
The 2017/18 might have been her first full season as a Veteran, but it was another successful one, seeing her perform consistently in the 41-60lb class with multiple wins and highest percentage of bodyweights pulled throughout the season; she came away with 1st in the class for the overall Championship (the 2nd year running) as well as the trophy for highest percentage pulled throughout the season. She even pulled the highest percentage of bodyweight for the season at the Eastleigh Weightpull, but due to attending less than 50% of the competitions was unable to claim a Championship Award.
The 2018/19 season saw her retain her Championship trophy for 1st in the 41-60lb class, and also claim the highest % of weight pulled by a bitch of the season at 28.85x her bodyweight.
The 2019/20 season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, but saw her only beaten once in the 41-60lb class despite approaching her 10th year and still pull a respectable highest % for a bitch at
27.27x her weight.
She has also over the years enjoyed getting out and about with her backpack, and by means of several 10+ mile trips carrying 30% of her bodyweight (including overnight camps), earned her WPD title in 2013.
In April 2014, she celebrated her 4th birthday with her first WPDA leg by completing a 24 mile backpack / camp out in the challenging Lake District terrain. We went back up to climb the mountains around the Lakes in 2015 for another challenging trek, and completed the requirements for her WPDA title in May 2015 with a circa 44 mile backpack over 3 days in the beautiful Cairngorms scenery, Scotland, which also earned a first leg towards her WPDX title.
In addition to the Allerton Weightpull Championship, she has also been exploring the vast Allerton Estate for the opportunity to undertake 10+ mile treks, and has earned her WTD title running with in a variety teams with friends from different kennels; her first leg was earned with Womble & Kizzy, the next two with Leader & Bear, and her final closing leg in a two dog team with Falco.
She continues to enjoy trekking as team mate to Dylan and Harry, and at 7 years old even had her first competitive rally with Dylan at AMCUK Kershope 2017 where they came 2nd in MB2 to an all CED team - not bad work!
And just to prove she's not just a pretty face in the ring and determination in harness, she completed her KC GCDS Puppy Foundation award 2 days before her 6 month birthday and following a few years without any formal training passed her KC GCDS Bronze award at 5 years of age on her first attempt.
A big thank you again to Jayne and Ian for entrusting this special girl to me. As with those mals who came before her she has proved completely different to that I have previously experienced - a delightful challenge in her own special way - and has brought an extra spark of happiness to my life that I don't think any other dog could replicate.
