Say hello to Dylan, our first Greenland Dog who started us on our venture into this very special breed.
His litter represents a collaboration between two kennels, with breeder's Nicola Singh & Stuart Winterton of Sledog having imported both parents from Odd Lund & Kristin Bjørndal of the Tasermiut kennel in Norway.
Dylan's Sire, Puck (Jester Sledog Av Tasermiut) had a great show career earning himself the title of Top Greenland Dog Puppy for 2012 / 13 and Crufts Best Puppy in 2013 followed by Crufts Best of Breed in 2014. He had a wonderful attitude to life, laid back with dogs of both genders and great working ethic, and it was of great sadness that he passed at only 7 years of age.
His dam, Java (Arabica Av Tasermiut at Sledog ShCM) is currently the top winning bitch in the UK, achieving Crufts Best of Breeds in 2012, 2015 & 2018, and earning the title of Top Greenland Dog for 2012, 2013 & 2014 alongside numerous other Best of Breed & Best Veteran awards. Her efforts also made her the only Greenland bitch to earn her ShCM title. She is an equally amiable girl with both genders who takes all working endeavours in her stride and has earned backpacking titles under the UK AMWA WPD Scheme.
In personality Dylan is an all or nothing dog, with an intensely affectionate & tactile nature with his friends, and a wicked sense of humour. He is always ready to show his playful cheeky side, especially when it might embarrass me; as a puppy he bonded particularly quickly with our "big kid" Harry, who matched him in his love of playfights and kisses, but in maturity has settled into being the toy boy for our Malamute bitch Lucie who despite being 6 years his senior keeps him well and truly on his toes.
To add to this, Dylan has an obvious if stubborn intelligence - proving a quick learner and earning his KC GCDS Puppy Foundation Award at only 4 months of age as well as mastering all doors and babygate in the house at less than a year of age - he certainly enjoys a challenge!
His show career started with a real bang in 2016 at Bath Championship Show, where at 6 months of age he not only won his AVNSC W/P class but went on to take Best Dog, Best Opposite Sex and Best
Puppy in Breed - what a superstar!
His list of achievements in his puppy career can be seen at the top of the page, but suffice it to say he exceeded our expectations, especially taking his first Championship Show Best of Breed at
only 10 months of age.
2017 was a strong year for Dylan. In the UK he had multiple Best of Breeds, Best Dogs and Reserve Best Dogs in both Breed and AVNSC classes at UK Championship Shows. He also had his first trip "abroad" where he hit the IKC Munster circuit with a bang, not only gaining 5 green stars (CACs) from as many shows, but going on to take 3rd in a Competitive Group 5 at Navan Championship Show, a Greenland Dog first all round!! This year also bought two further firsts upon gaining his final 2 Green Stars, making him the first Irish Champion in the breed and the first ever UK Bred Greenland Dog champion. To top it all off, he also gained the IKC award of 'Annual Champion', his first CACIB towards his International Champion title, as well as claiming Top Greenland Dog & Top Puppy in the GDCGB Greenland Dog of the Year Awards.
2018 was another strong year for Dylan in the show ring.
In the UK it saw him gain a Crufts Best Dog, multiple Championship Show Best of Breeds and Open Show Best of Breeds / Group placings.
He has also faired well across the water to gain numerous more Best Dogs / Best of Breeds and CACs / CACIBs, starting numerous Champion titles and satisfying the criteria for his Dutch Champion,
Polish Champion & International Champion Titles. He has also gained a raft of other awards including World Winner, Euro Winner, Benelux Winner (ND & BE) & Celtic Winner 2018.
As a result of his efforts, he has gained Top Greenland Dog in the UK under both the GDCGB GDOTY scheme and Our Dogs Arden Grange Top Dog competition, not to mention the IKC title of Annual Champion
2018 - what a good boy!
2019 proved a phenomenal year for Dylan in the show ring.
He closed Hungarian, Luxemburg, Belgian and Benelux Champion titles, and started his title in Austria gaining his second European Winner title in the process alongside many other winners awards. He
even made a bit of Breed History with a group shortlist in Belgium!
Back in the UK he gained 11 more Best of Breeds at Open Shows (plus several group placings) and 8 Best of Breeds / Best Dogs out of 10 shows with breed classes at Championship Show level, well and
truly securing the honour of being Our Dogs / Arden Grange Top Dog in breed for the second year running.
2020 of course has proven a strange year, with the coronavirus outbreak essentially stopping a majority of shows after Crufts, but in the 3 or so months available so far Dylan has seen a strng of successes, winning BAVNSC & WG1 at his first Open Show of the year (one of only three Greenlands to gain this accolade, the first being his father) and taking Reserve Best Dog award to kennel mate Noah at the prestigious Crufts, his third time gaining this accolade.
Dylan enjoyed a break from the show ring for a majority of 2021 / 22 while our focus was on the youngsters, but that doesn't mean his influence wasn't seen. The offspring from his first litter did him proud in the show ring and earned him the title of Our Dogs UK Top Stud Dog in breed for 2022 (two of his daughters pictured below).
As a youngster, Dylan showed all the promise of a good worker with the natural desire to pull and evident strength.
His forte is definitely on the rig, where he took to training in a 3 dog team with Lucie & Harry with great enthusiasm. It became clear very quickly that he and Harry were well suited and had a rapport in lead, and so in January 2017 - at 13 months of age - he had his first rally experience with Harry and I am thrilled to say came away with a 1st place trophy in MB2.
He repeated this performance a couple of weeks later at Grizedale Rally, and in March 2017 ran at AMWA Sherwood Pine's to take 3rd in AFSDC against CED & Mixed Siberian Teams - not a bad result for a young dog! He also completed his first mid-long distance trek in April 2017, with team mate Harry, at Allerton, helping Harry work towards finishng his AMCA WTD title.
His 17/18 season saw him run with a variety of different lady friends - from Malamute kennel-mate Lucie out for her first rally experience at AMCUK Kershope Rally, to 10.5 year old Siberian Tokala at Grizedale, and finally Canadian Eskimo Dog Eiger for their first time at Carron Valley.
Our working season for 18/19 got rather side tracked competitively due to the new pups, but we have made it to a few rallies in the 19/20 season, seeing Dylan team up with Alice for the first time and seeing them gain a class win at their first rally together!
At 8 month old he was permitted to have a try at pulling an empty weightpull trolley through the chute and he barely seemed to notice the weight behind him - a good omen! In October 2016 he had his first go in novice class where he was allowed to pull 800lb before calling it a day and was then consistently training in novice class up to the maximum permitted weight of 1000lb while refining his technique (mostly which involves not going at 100MPH)!
In January 2017 he was put into competition, with friend Marina Page handling him in the chute, and I am proud to say that at his first pull achieved a weight of 1100lb, and at his second competition pulled 1400lb (over 16x his bodyweight) in tough conditions.
In February 2018 he pulled a new Personal Best and what we believe is a UK Greenland Dog record with a pull of 1700lb (over 20x his bodyweight) - what a clever boy! He is still fairly hit and miss in the chute and his performance is very much on how mischievous he is feeling, but we are looking forward to what the next few seasons will bring.
He has also started training with the Malamutes for backpacking excursions at around 18 months of age and was clearly unphased by carrying a pack with him!
At 4 years old, we moved our focus back onto training once again, getting some one on one time with his humans being something he very much enjoys
With so many achievements under his belt, we are very much proud of Dylan and look forward to many more adventures :)
